Business Manager – Journeyman Film Company (www.journeymanfilm.com)

People work hard every day to make a difference in their world. We use our talents to make films, web videos, and commercials to help them do that.

Journeyman Film Company is a small production house based in Halifax/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Like this city, our company has serious momentum. In the past 3 years we’ve grown from two to six full time staff, with many additional creative collaborators on our team.

Our work ranges from TV spots for local university recruitment, to training films for the Canadian Military, to web films for regional promotion. We tackle challenging projects in the health sector, support Canada’s leading shipbuilder and other industry heavy-hitters, and take on assignments for all levels of government. We also do work in the non-profit sector, and have journeyed as far away as Africa to get the job done.

And now it’s come to this: we need a full time business manager to join our team and to make his or her mark on a growing company. It’s now time to write the next chapter of our story. We are on the cusp of something bigger. We intend to become one of the best companies in Canada producing creative client films.

The new business manager will enable everyone on the team to focus on what they do best, ensuring that we are efficient, consistent, organized and profitable. We need a generalist who is equally comfortable to play in the realm of Financial Control, Business Administration and Operations Management, with a touch of HR, PR, and Marketing!

As the successful candidate, you are a natural leader with an entrepreneurial sprit who embraces all that this creative and vibrant environment has to offer in the name of creating the best possible work for clients. You also have a great work ethic, the commitment to make a difference and the ability to recognize and act on opportunity.

Your strong business acumen (supported by a related Business degree) will allow us greater control of the business through the design and delivery of relevant and timely financial reports, measures and projections. You help us develop and realize our business plan, guided by our long term strategic plan. Your critical mind will help us to draft and adhere to policies and procedures, to ensure appropriate and accurate documentation and to create better systems. Your skill for management extends to project tracking, time tracking, job costing and reporting, as well as managing staff performance expectations. You also have a mind for risk mitigation and business continuity. You are one of those folks who are equally comfortable managing both people and numbers and you can initiate solutions that make the team more efficient, effective and profitable. You are intrinsically motivated to do the best possible job, every time - often inspiring those around you. And even though you have a business degree, you’re not afraid to empty the compost…

As a member of team you should be able to clearly demonstrate the following:

· Small Business Experience – experience with contracts, regulations, government incentives, and other administrative matters; you are multi talented generalist and you embrace the challenges small business has to offer.

· Financial Experience – experience with accounting software, spreadsheets and reporting, as well as dealing with accounts payable, invoices, receivables, payroll, taxes, financing, building budgets and making smart operational decisions.

· Leadership – you have a proven ability to provide leadership and management to a team by ensuring that we stay accountable and on task.

· Excellent Communication Skills – you are equally comfortable in front of the client, your team mate or the barista at the local café.

· Self-starter – no need to ask to do the right thing; you know what to do and have the confidence and experience to just do it.

· Technological savvy – you have some comfort with network management, ideally some familiarity with a Mac environment.

This is not a company with suits and cubicles. You need to thrive in a small, dynamic, multi-tasking and collaborative environment. We’re located in a funky historic property in Dartmouth, away from the hubbub of downtown Halifax, right around the corner from the hipster Two if By Sea Café.

Some specifics:

· Position: This is a full time position.

· Salary: $45,000 - $60,000 pending experience.

· Benefits: We can offer you a benefits package through the Chamber of Commerce Group Plan.

· Start Date: September 10, 2012.

· Please send a resumé and cover letter explaining how you connect to this opportunity, to opportunity@journeymanfilm.com by September 2, 2012.

Only those applicants to be interviewed will be contacted. Thanks for your interest in Journeyman Film Company
